On Reflection.
It’s a little frustrating when reflecting takes so much time, and I have felt like I’m living life looking backwards. But life moves so fast, and sometimes all I can remember is what I’ve written down… How fickle the human memory and recall is!! But I have recalled a quote I heard from a professor in college… We don’t learn through experience, we learn through reflecting on experience. It has proven so true — I cannot recall at all the wrongs I have committed that I haven’t reflected on (or recognized). There is so much to be learned when I look inward and at the things that have happened, the grievances I’ve committed, the emotions I feel.
You may gripe that half of your life is spent reflecting, but trust me, a year (or even just a month) from now, you won’t remember the fine points of your struggles that loom so large now — You synthethize and digest the experiences and move on.
This is natural and good, but I encourage you to keep writing down and reflecting on the experiences you have in this age.
Even if it feels corny.
You’ll begin to appreciate the threads of struggle that wind through your life, and begin to recognize yourself as you live life and reflect on it.
I would love to share my reflection tools with you, for your use in the future. I hope it starts to feel more a part of the process of composting, growing, becoming, rather than a tedious chore or task you don’t hasten towards.
Feel free to change up the prompts to reflect the person you want to become—What you focus on is what you will propagate! e.g., “what feeling did you embrace most?” “where did you focus on the positive this month?” depending on what value you want to focus on this year/month/period of time.
As always, take what works, leave what doesn’t.
love,
